Yonge and College: The Essentials

When you’re picking your future neighbourhood, it’s easy to get tempted by buzzed-about restaurants, cool bars, and hipster coffee shops. But when you move into a new condo, sometimes it’s more important to think about the essentials. Where will you buy your groceries? Is there a branch of your bank nearby? And what about when you need that late-night prescription or cough medicine?

Luckily YC Condos is right next to Yonge & College, and a hop, skip and jump away from all the essentials you need to get your daily errands/chores done. So bookmark this post for when you move in – you can thank us when you’re visiting the doctor, tailor, butcher, or grabbing your other daily essentials.

Where to get daily essentials: Whether you need shampoo, a greeting card, or a prescription filled, the Shoppers Drug Mart at the corner of Yonge & College is a great option. It’s open 24 hours and has a pharmacy, Canada Post outlet, and photo lab. You can grab new passport photos while getting the flu shot – that’s what we call multitasking.

Where to do your banking: Here’s a list of all the bank branches near YC Condos. Never pay ATM fees again (we know you’re smarter than that):

  • TD Canada Trust – 21 Carlton St., just east of Yonge & College (full branch location)

  • BMO – 763 Bay St., at Bay & Gerrard (full branch location)

  • Scotiabank – 1 Carlton St., corner of Yonge & College (ATM only)

  • Royal Bank – you have two options: a full branch right at Yonge & Grenville, 468 Yonge St., or an ATM inside the Shoppers Drug Mart at Yonge & College

  • ING Direct – there’s an ING network Meridian Credit Union ATM at 777 Bay St. (Bay & College)

Where to keep your wardrobe in good shape: For dry cleaning, we recommend College Park Dry Cleaners, which is (you guessed it) located at College Park. There’s also Corporate Cleaners at 777 Bay (Bay & College).

Where to renew your driver’s license or pay that pesky parking ticket: ServiceOntario has a location at 777 Bay St. Check the website to see if they offer the service you need before taking a number.

Where to stock up on groceries: If you move into YC Condos you’ll have no problem picking up last-minute dinner ingredients – there’s the massive Loblaws at Carlton/Bay (the old Maple Leaf Gardens), a Metro at College Park, a Sobey’s at 777 Bay St., and a Longo’s just east of Yonge & Bloor. Or you could do what we do and just order GroceryGateway online – who wants to carry grocery bags home in the cold?

Where to visit the dentist/doctor: Have a toothache, or need to get that lingering cough looked at? Pop over to Toothworks dental clinic at College Park, or get access to the walk-in clinic or a new family doctor at Bay College Medical. And if you’re looking for a refill on contacts or a new pair of glasses, pop over to Yonge & College Optometry.

Everyone’s version of “the essentials” may differ – for us it also includes a good all-day breakfast, so make sure to check out Fran’s just west of Yonge & College. And tell us on Facebook and Twitter: what are your essentials in the neighbourhood?
